ode

Another artist gone. His love and instinct for people was expressed through photography. For sixty years he brought beautiful, powerful people to summation with his camera. Presidents, movie stars, activists; he captured and epitomized the spirit of each, then left it all behind Tuesday.

He will be immortalized of course (blah blah blah), through his work- his art.

I expect that that should make me feel better about his death and even my own, but it doesn’t.

The art will remain but the artist is gone. All that is left is snapshots of injustice, his beautiful perspective now decay leaving only his efforts, remnants that will never do justice to the amazing work of art that he himself was.

Someday, even those will be forgotten and it will be as if he never existed.

So run, run little gerbil! Spin the wheel of your reality as fast as you can, peppering the world with evidence your existence piece by piece if you dare. But you will never do better than he.
